Connect Discord
Add the Spawnix bot to your Discord server, choose what it posts and where, and decide what each Discord role can do.
Connecting Discord brings your guild's polls, forum threads, events and loot into your Discord server. Members vote, RSVP and claim loot with buttons right in Discord, and people with the right Discord roles can create polls and events with slash commands. Spawnix stays the source of truth: every click in Discord is checked with the same rules as the dashboard.
Only the owner and admins can connect and set up Discord.
Step 1: Add the bot to your server
- Open Settings and find the Discord card.
- Click Add Spawnix to Discord.
- Discord asks which server to add the bot to. Pick your guild's server. You need permission to add apps to that server in Discord.
- Approve the permissions (see below).
- Discord sends you back to Settings, where a banner says the server is connected.
What the bot asks for
The bot asks for only three permissions:
- View Channel
- Send Messages
- Embed Links
That's all. It doesn't ask for administrator rights, can't read your members' messages, and can't change roles.
Step 2: Choose the announcements channel
Under Announcements channel, pick the channel where Spawnix should post. The list shows your server's text and announcement channels. Choose Don't post announcements if you only want slash commands.
Everyone who can read that channel sees what's posted. That's why Spawnix only ever posts content open to all members:
- polls with no rank limit on who can see them,
- new threads in public forum categories,
- public events.
Anything rank-limited or private stays in the dashboard.
Step 3: Choose what to post
Under Post, tick what you want announced:
| Option | What gets posted |
|---|---|
| New polls (members vote with buttons) | The poll with voting buttons. Counts update as votes come in |
| New threads in public forum categories | The thread title, the start of the opening post and a Read thread button to your website |
| New public events (members RSVP with buttons) | The event with Going, Maybe and Can't go buttons and a live count |
Posts update live: when votes or RSVPs change, or you edit a poll or event, the Discord post changes too. If you delete a poll or event in Spawnix, its post says it was removed.
Loot hauls can be posted to the same channel when you create them (see loot and items). New recruitment applications go to the channel you set in recruitment settings (see recruitment).
Step 4: Decide what Discord roles can do
Under What Discord roles can do, there's a row for each role in your Discord server. @everyone is everyone in your server. Tick what people with each role can do with the bot:
| Grant | What it allows |
|---|---|
| View | See polls, events and loot with commands like /poll list and /events list |
| Take part | Vote, RSVP and claim loot. Includes View |
| Polls | Create polls with /poll create and close their own |
| Events | Create events with /events create and cancel their own |
| Loot | Log loot hauls with /loot create and close claims on their own. Only shown for games with loot |
Nobody needs a Spawnix account for this. The first time someone takes part or creates something from Discord, they're added to your members as a Discord member. Discord members can't sign in and don't count toward your plan's member limit. If they later sign in to Spawnix with Discord, the Discord member is merged into their account.
People who use the bot with only Discord role grants see only what's open to every member, like the lowest rank does.
Members who link their Discord account
Members who sign in to Spawnix once with Continue with Discord are linked. They keep their Spawnix access in Discord as well as anything their Discord roles grant:
- members view and take part,
- owners and admins can create everything,
- moderators can create polls (and loot hauls, in games with loot),
- guests can only view.
Linked members also get their rank, so they can vote in rank-limited polls and claim loot their rank allows. People can close or cancel what they created; Spawnix moderators and up can close anything (for events, owners and admins).
Step 5: Check your guild's time zone
Start times typed into /events create are read in your guild's time zone, which the owner sets in Settings under General. The Discord card shows which one it is. Pick the zone most of your officers think in. Discord then shows each member the time in their own time zone.
Step 6: Save and test
- Click Save. You should see "Discord settings saved."
- Click Send test. Spawnix posts a short hello message to your announcements channel.
If the test fails with a message that Discord refused it, check that the bot can view and send messages in that channel. Send test works once you've saved an announcements channel.
Restyle your Discord posts
Discord styles from the marketplace change how the bot's posts look: their accent color, title wording, footer and picture. Install one, then click Use for Discord posts on it. Your recent posts are redrawn to match. Click Stop using to go back to Spawnix's own look.
Disconnect
To disconnect, click Disconnect on the Discord card and confirm with Disconnect and remove the bot?. The bot leaves your Discord server. You can connect again at any time.
Troubleshooting
After adding the bot, a banner on the Discord card tells you how it went:
| Banner | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Discord server connected. Now choose the channel for announcements." | All good. Carry on with step 2 |
| "Connecting Discord was cancelled." | You closed or declined the Discord page. Click Add Spawnix to Discord again |
| "That Discord server is already connected to another Spawnix guild." | Each Discord server links to one Spawnix guild. Disconnect it from the other guild first, or pick a different server |
| "That connection link expired. Please try again." | The link was too old. Start again with Add Spawnix to Discord |
| "Discord didn't confirm the connection. Please try again." | Something went wrong on the way back from Discord. Try again in a moment |
Other common problems:
- A channel isn't in the list. Only text and announcement channels are listed. Reload the page after creating a new channel.
- Polls aren't being posted. Check New polls is ticked and the poll's Who can see it is set to everyone. Rank-limited polls are never posted.
- A thread wasn't posted. Only threads started in a public category are announced.
- Slash commands don't show. Type
/in a channel of the connected server; commands only work in servers, not in direct messages.
Tips and tricks
- Create a dedicated channel, like
#guild-board, for Spawnix posts so they don't get lost in chat. - Give @everyone just View and your member role Take part. Visitors can look, members can join in.
- Give Events to your raid leaders' Discord role, so they can schedule from Discord without dashboard access.
- Connecting Discord earns the Signal Linked achievement and 100 guild renown (see renown and seasons).
- See Discord commands for everything your members can do once the bot is in.
